Does Starlink Really Help Pay for Mars? SpaceX's Filing Answers
Business Onion · 2:59
In May 2026 SpaceX filed to go public, and the filing showed what Starlink had become: in 2025 it brought in $11.4 billion, 61% of all SpaceX's revenue. Part 4, the finale of THE STARLINK BET. Before Starlink, every company that tried to build a satellite internet network in low orbit lost its investors' money. By 2025, Starlink was the only part of SpaceX earning an operating profit — so does it really help pay for Mars, as Musk said it would in 2015? Numbers & sources: "Starlink" here is SpaceX's Connectivity segment as reported in its S-1 (it also includes Starshield and Starlink Mobile): 2025 revenue $11,387M of SpaceX's $18,674M, and $4,423M of operating income. The Starship figure is the Space segment's 2025 research-and-development line ($3,004M), which the filing says funded Starship. SpaceX's 2025 net loss was $4,937M; its AI segment lost $6,355M from operations. Musk's "breakeven cash flow" post (Nov 2, 2023) is a post, not an audited figure. In 2025, 122 of SpaceX's 165 Falcon launches carried its own payloads, mostly Starlink. Average revenue per subscriber fell from $99 a month (2023) to $66 (Q2 2026) while subscribers rose from 2.3 million (end of 2023) to 12.0 million (June 30, 2026). Satellite counts are "in orbit," per Jonathan McDowell (Sept 24, 2026): Amazon Leo 392, Starlink 11,135. Telesat has booked 14 Falcon 9 launches for its Lightspeed network; none had flown as of September 2026. In the first half of 2026 SpaceX spent $23.6B on AI capital projects, against $2.8B of Starlink operating profit; it is paying for that build-out with borrowing and its June 2026 stock sale (~$85.7B net).
