Google Said Its Goal Was To Make You Leave. Now Most Searches Never Do.

Google's own philosophy page still carries this line: "We may be the only people in the world who can say our goal is to have people leave our website as quickly as possible." In the first four months of 2026, 68% of American Google searches ended with nobody leaving at all. Out of every thousand searches, 276 reach the open web. Big technology companies do this over and over. They own the thing everyone else has to build on, then build their own version of whatever sells on top of it. Microsoft owned Windows. Google's power came from somewhere else — it owned the page every business had to be found on. Search for the weather and Google shows you the weather. Somebody built that weather site, and now nobody needs it. Then do that for flights, shopping, sports scores, definitions and currency.
