The US China Chip War

Business Onion · 2:57

he most advanced AI chip on Earth is designed in America, built on one island off the coast of China, using a machine only one company — in the Netherlands — can make. And the US and China are fighting a war over who's allowed to have it. No shots fired. The weapon is a wall. In October 2022, Washington banned China from the best AI chips and the machines that make them. It worked because of a strange fact: the most powerful AI runs on a chain of monopolies — ASML, TSMC, Nvidia. Control three chokepoints and you don't have to make anything yourself. But the wall leaked. Nvidia kept designing chips to sit just under the line. Then Huawei shipped a 7-nanometer chip that wasn't supposed to exist — the same week the US Commerce Secretary landed in Beijing. And a startup called DeepSeek, cut off from the best chips, trained a top-tier AI for under $6 million. Did the wall slow China down, or light a fire under it? Even the people who built it disagree — Nvidia's CEO calls it "a failure"; the Secretary who designed it calls holding China back "a fool's errand." Then it got absurd: the US banned a chip, un-banned it, and took a 15% cut of the sales — and China told its firms not to buy it at all.
