They Shipped A Product Together In February. In April, One Of Them Launched The Competitor.

In February 2026, Figma and Anthropic shipped a product together — Figma's design features ran on Anthropic's models. On 14 April, Anthropic's chief product officer Mike Krieger stepped down from Figma's board. Three days later, Anthropic launched a design tool of its own. Figma's stock fell about 7% that day. Big technology companies do this over and over. Microsoft owned the machine. Google owned the page. These companies own the model your product is built on. There's a loud version of what that means. Palantir's Alex Karp told investors in August 2026 that you're "paying for the right for them to migrate your IP, your know-how and your expertise to their model." Microsoft's Satya Nadella wrote in July that models learn from "exhaust" — your prompts, your tool use, and the corrections you make when the model gets something wrong. Both men sell the thing that would replace buying directly from a lab. And on the literal claim they're mostly wrong: Anthropic and OpenAI both say they don't train on business customers' prompts or data unless the customer asks. Most large companies buy through Microsoft's or Amazon's cloud, which sits outside even that.
