The finale. By the 1990s the Iranian revolution Yasser Arafat had helped train had a new favorite — Hamas, the Islamist rival to his secular Fatah. When Arafat signed the Oslo peace with Israel in 1993, the Islamic Republic denounced it and poured money into Hamas and Islamic Jihad to wreck it. In 2002 Israel caught his Palestinian Authority taking a shipload of Iranian arms — the Karine A — and Washington wrote him off. Besieged by Israeli tanks in his Ramallah compound, Arafat died a prisoner in 2004, barely mourned by the revolution he had armed. But what he set in motion outlived him: his old bodyguard Imad Mughniyeh became Hezbollah's deadliest operative, and the network he'd helped seed grew into the "Axis of Resistance" — reaching its violent peak on October 7th, 2023, before being decapitated in the two years that followed. He wanted to be the patron of every revolution. He got his wish — and it outgrew him, discarded him, and outlived him.
