In August 1921, Britain crowned Faisal bin Hussein King of Iraq — a country he had never ruled. A year earlier, France had destroyed his Arab kingdom in Damascus; now Britain handed him a new throne, partly to secure the oil of the north. He spent the rest of his life trying to turn a borrowed crown into a real nation — stitching together three former Ottoman provinces of Sunni, Shia, and Kurd — and died in 1933. Twenty-five years later, on 14 July 1958, his grandson Faisal II and the royal family were killed in a Baghdad palace courtyard, and the dynasty Britain built was gone in a single morning.
