The Trade War That Created Canada — 1866 | Why July 1st Is the Answer to 2026

History Onion · 2:59

In August 2026, 50% American tariffs hit Canadian goods and the Prime Minister said Canada was "at war" with the United States. It has all happened before. In 1866 Washington canceled its free-trade treaty with the British colonies, Irish-American veterans invaded Canada at Niagara, and a bill in Congress proposed admitting every colony as American states. Thirteen months later, on July 1st, 1867, three of those colonies answered by becoming a country: the Dominion of Canada. The annexation bill even budgeted $85.7 million to take over the colonies' debts — Congress pricing Canada's admission. Numbers & sources: tariff figures (50%, ~$20B, Aug 22, 2026) — Al Jazeera / NPR reporting. 1866 Annexation Bill debt assumption ($85.7M) — bill text, H.R. 754, 39th Congress. Ridgeway dead (nine) — Veterans Affairs Canada, Ridgeway Nine Memorial. And yes — about 800 men: the Niagara crossing was the spearhead of a planned multi-front campaign, a second Fenian force of ~1,000 crossed into Canada East a week later, and the Fenian Brotherhood claimed tens of thousands of Civil War veterans behind them. The colonies took it seriously enough to call out roughly 20,000 militia. Some scenes are cinematic reconstructions of documented events. All quotes, dates, and sources are historically verified.
