The Perfect Peru Trip

Travel Onion · 2:05

About a week, from Cusco to Lake Titicaca. Cusco was the Inca capital: the Spanish built a church on top of its greatest temple, and when an earthquake struck in 1950, much of the church came down — the Inca walls underneath, fitted without mortar, held. In the Sacred Valley, Moray's giant circular terraces can be around fifteen degrees warmer at the bottom than the top, and are thought to have been an Inca crop-testing site; nearby at Maras, about three thousand salt pools are still worked by local families. Then the train follows the river to Machu Picchu — there's no record the Spanish ever found it, and when an American explorer arrived in 1911, a local farmer showed him the way. And the trip ends on Lake Titicaca, where the Uros people build their islands out of reeds. Save this for the trip you actually take. Follow for more places worth the trip. 📍 PLAN YOUR VISIT — PERU ✈️ Getting there: fly to Lima and on to Cusco; the train to Machu Picchu leaves from the Sacred Valley; Lake Titicaca is reached from Puno — about a week 📅 Best time: the dry season, May–September 🎯 The route: Cusco · the Sacred Valley (Moray, Maras) · Machu Picchu · Lake Titicaca
