The Trees That Can't Rot

Travel Onion · 2:21

In the Namib — the desert people often call the oldest on Earth — there's a white clay pan full of dead camelthorn trees that have been standing for about nine hundred years. They're not petrified. Deadvlei gets under 10mm of rain a year: too dry for the insects and microbes that break wood down, so the trees never fell, and centuries of desert sun scorched them black. Around them rise some of the tallest dunes on Earth — the wall behind the pan tops 300 metres — and at first light the dunes turn orange while the pan below stays in blue shadow. For about an hour the whole place is four colours: white clay, black trees, orange sand, blue sky. Save this one for the trip you actually take. Follow for more places worth the trip. 📍 PLAN YOUR VISIT — DEADVLEI ✈️ Getting there: fly to Windhoek, drive ~5h to the Sesriem area; stay near the gate so you're inside at sunrise 📅 Best time: May–September (cool mornings, clear light); first light is the magic window 🎯 Don't miss: Deadvlei at dawn · the Big Daddy ridge climb · Dune 45 · Sesriem Canyon
