The Perfect Slovenia Trip
Travel Onion · 2:11
Four stops, one small country. Slovenia is about the size of New Jersey, so every stop is a short drive from the last: Lake Bled, where a church sits on Slovenia's only natural island — 99 stone steps up, and by tradition the groom carries his bride up every one — with Vintgar Gorge just up the road, walked on a boardwalk fixed to the rock. Over the mountains, the emerald Soča runs through a valley that was a First World War front line; Hemingway set part of A Farewell to Arms here. Then Postojna, where a little train takes you into the cave and the blind olm lives — floods used to wash them out, and people took them for baby dragons. Next door, Predjama Castle sits in a cave mouth halfway up a cliff, where the robber knight Erazem held out through a siege of more than a year (by legend throwing fresh cherries at the army below). And the road ends at Piran, a Venetian old town on a coastline under 50 km long. Save this for the trip you actually take. Follow for more places worth the trip. 📍 PLAN YOUR VISIT — SLOVENIA ✈️ Getting there: fly into Ljubljana (or Venice / Trieste / Zagreb) and drive — about a week makes the loop easy 📅 Best time: late spring (May–June) or September; July–August is busiest at Bled and Vintgar 🎯 The route: Lake Bled & Vintgar · the Soča valley · Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle · Piran
